The Medical University of South Carolina is set to begin construction on a $175 million College of Medicine building, marking the first time in more than a century that the university’s flagship college will have a dedicated space.
MUSC leaders, physicians, faculty and staff will gather Friday, Dec. 12, to celebrate the groundbreaking of the new facility at 35 Bee St. that will enhance and better support innovative medical education, according to a news release.
Currently, College of Medicine students use facilities across the MUSC campus, sharing classrooms and study spaces with students from MUSC’s other colleges, according to the release.
The new facility will be a 186,000-square-foot state-of-the-art building. Some of the features include:
- Active learning spaces
- Large classrooms
- Student study and relaxation spaces
- Faculty/alumni commons
- College of Medicine dean’s office
- Faculty and staff offices
- Wellness spaces
The estimated cost of the new building is $175 million, which is being raised from public and private funds, the release stated. The new facility is scheduled to open in summer 2027.

“Building on MUSC’s rich and storied history, we look to the future with excitement for all that we can accomplish,” Dr. Terrence E. “Terry” Steyer, dean, College of Medicine, vice president for medical affairs, said in a news release. “This new building will have a significant impact in elevating our medical education experience and environment, which will yield positive results for generations to come.”
